The
offspring of the Golden King of Chingis Khagan, the first Jibzundabma
Hutugtu Undur Geghen Zanabazar was the enlightened genius of Mongolia,
the 17th century, famous sculptor, painter, poet, doctor, publisher, the
supreme spiritual authority of Mongolia. He was born to the family of
Tushet Khan Gombodorj, on the 25th day of the ninth month of the year of
wooden boar (1635) at a place called Yeun Zuil, (present Yesun Zuil sum
of Uburkhangai province ).
Zanabazar`s father Tushet Khan Gombodorj was the offspring of Chingis
Khagan`s family, grandson of Abutai Sain Khan, son of nobleman Onokhui
Uizen, third son of Gersenz Jalair Khuntaiji, who was the son of
Batmunkh Dayan Khagan.
In 1640 he was recognized as the reincarnation of Jettzun Darnat by the
Panchen Lama and the Dalai Lama. He was invited to the throne of the
First Jettzun Dampa and enthroned as the Head of Gelug tradition in
Mongolia.
Beginning at young age Undur Geghen studied the Sutras and Tantras of
the Buddhist doctrine in the Gelug tradition, which is like pure refined
gold. In 1649 he went to the Land of Snow and studied the five sciences
under the great Panchen Choe Gyi Gyaltsen and fully acquired the
qualities of knowledge and realization. Then he returned to his mother
land Mongolia and founded many monasteries and schools. Under his
guidance scholars emerged like stars in the sky and the teachings of Je
Tsongkhapa, the second Buddha, flourished as brilliant as the sun.
Zanabazar, receiving the invitation of Nairalt Tuv Khan of Chin Empiry,
visited Beijing on the 14th day of the first month of the year of the
Water hare (1723 ) and was killed in the Yellow monastery of Beijing.
His body had been moved back to Ikh Khuree, then was buried in special
mausoleum in Amarbayasgalant monastery.
